DAYS OUT

isle of wight steam railway
Step back to a bygone era when steam power was the order of the day. Thrill to the sight and sound of powerful majestic steam engines and breathe in the evocative smells of a real steam railway. Soak-up the rhythm of quiet rural stations while enjoying the friendliness of traditionally uniformed staff.
Experience the golden age of travel as you settle back in our beautifully restored Victorian and Edwardian carriages with their gleaming brass handles and vintage droplight windows. Discover an idyllic view of the Island’s unspoilt countryside; keep an eye out for a red squirrel as you pass through ancient woodland.
Our Locomotives and Carriages have all been painstakingly restored to pristine condition and are the hallmark of our delightful railway. Our oldest locomotive was built in 1876 and carriages date back to 1864!
Most visitors start their journey from our main station at Havenstreet which is located in the middle of the line. You’ll travel first to Wootton, which is being lovingly restored as an Edwardian country terminus. The train then runs to Smallbrook Junction which offers a convenient cross-platform interchange with the electric Ryde to Shanklin line, before returning to Havenstreet.
The train journey takes about 1 hour; however please allow at least 3 hours for your visit to see everything at Havenstreet station.

Farringford - historic home & garden of Tennyson
From 1853 until his death in 1892, Farringford was the main home of the renowned Victorian poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson. In this secluded spot on the Isle of Wight, the new Poet Laureate and his family sought a retreat from the clamour of London life. But while Farringford provided a tranquil domestic haven, it also attracted many of Tennyson’s eminent friends, becoming a locus of intellectual and artistic activity. It remained the family home for successive generations, before eventually becoming a hotel in 1945.
